Civic Day - Halifax Civic Trust on 18th June 2022

This year Halifax Civic Trust will be celebrating Civic Day with a stall on the High Street in Halifax.

They are very keen to celebrate Civic Day as this year they will be using Civic Day on Saturday, June 18th, to celebrate their 60th anniversary. In doing so, they hope to promote the society's work, attracting a few new members(!) And also help to encourage footfall on the high street.

On Civic Day, Halifax will arrange for a stall to "Woolshops", one of Halifax's main shopping areas near the Piece Hall. They want to focus on the high street to attract shoppers, day-trippers, and Halifax visitors, so it's an ideal location. Throughout the day, they shall be offering free heritage walks around the town to encourage people to get involved and will be publishing photographs on the social media of Halifax throughout the day.

Civic Voice is calling on all civic societies, community groups, businesses and councils to come together and focus efforts to celebrate and champion the high street for Civic Day 2022. We want to see a Civic Day event in each local authority area, with a specific focus on a high street or town centre.

Get inspired by Halifax and get involved on June 18th 2022.

Civic Voice is calling on all civic societies, community groups, businesses and councils to come together and focus efforts to celebrate and champion the high street. Civic Day was first suggested in 2010 when Civic Voice was setting up, calling for a greater awareness of the activicites of civic societies, including one day in the year when every civic society and communtiy group puts on an event to celebrate and champion where you live.

Commenting on Civic Day, Ian Harvey, Executive Director of Civic Voice, said:

“We know that High Streets and town centres face significant challenges, and they need to reinvent themselves if they are to be the thriving heart of communities again, but no one can do this alone. It needs the work of all of us playing a part in revitalising our high streets. Civic Voice is calling on all civic societies, community groups, businesses and councils to come together and focus efforts to celebrate and champion the high street on June 18th. We want to see a Civic Day event in each local authority area, with a specific focus on a high street or centre. By focusing on a specific date, it can bring together the different partners to collaborate to address local challenges and to reviatlise our high streets. It can be the start of something special."

One of the measures of the Levelling Up White Paper focuses on civic pride, and that by 2030, 'pride in place', which is defined as "people's satisfaction with their town centre and engagement in local culture and community, will have risen in every area of the UK, with the gap between top-performing and the other regions closing.

The Levelling Up White Paper (page 206) wants to restore a sense of community, local pride and belonging, which is all set against the background of a civic deficit in the UK.
