We respond to the CLG Select Committee Inquiry on Planning

In addition to the Planning White Paper, this week we submitted evidence to the Housing, Communities and Local Government Select Committee call for evidence on the future of the planning system in England.

This inquiry invited views on a number of questions around community engagement, housing delivery and local plans. It was timed to sit alongside the Government's Planning White Paper consultation. Read more about the inquiry here.

Our response makes it clear that deregulating the planning system will not deliver the homes we need. We also warned against relying on solely on the commercial housebuilders to build the housing we need, making it clear that we have not built 300,000 since 1968 when we had a mass council house-building programme. In our response, we call on the Government to adopt the proposal in the Government’s Communities Framework (published in July 2019) to ‘strengthen community involvement in local placemaking… through a planning system centred on community involvement with statutory rights to become involved at every stage from planmaking to planning application.’
