York Civic Trust has celebrated the 10th anniversary of its unique and award-winning heritage training initiative called ‘Planning Club’.
In partnership with the University of York, it trains students to assess live planning applications and submit detailed recommendations to the local authority through the Trust’s role as a local planning consultee.
Since 2015 it’s provided 350 postgraduate students with real-life, hands-on experience of the planning process. Collectively volunteering up to 10,000 hours each year, they provide the amenity society with an equivalent casework capacity of five full-time members of staff – the envy of many a local planning authority, providing a transformative capability in its role in shaping the city’s changing built form.
