A study by the University of Westminster based on 117 LTNs in London shows that the number of those killed or seriously injured reduces by a third after a low traffic neighbourhood is introduced.
The study also shows that motor traffic fell whereas cycling and walking increased, implying an even better reduction in injury risk per trip for active travel modes (because there are more active journeys). In areas where LTNs have been removed, injury rates have gone back up to previous levels.
The London Standard commented: ‘You can’t argue with the data: LTNs are officially saving lives.’
