Leominster engineer celebrated by Blue Plaque

Leominster Civic Society have recently installed a Blue Plaque on Leominster Railway Station to commemorate Arthur Peppercorn, one of the foremost Chief Engineers of the London, North Eastern Railway.

Born in Stoke Prior just outside Leominster, he designed the A1 and A2 locomotives. Only one of his famous Pacific locomotives, an A2, 60532 Blue Peter, was preserved. No A1s were preserved. However, a brand new example, 60163 Tornado, was built as the next in the class. It moved under its own steam for the first time in August 2008.
