Ever keen to boost the Society’s profile within the local community – and hopeful of recruiting new members – the Committee at Wakefield Civic Society have decided to run an architectural photography competition, inviting members of the public to submit photos of Wakefield’s architecture.
There are three categories (city centre, suburban and rural), and three age groups (under 18, 18-25 and 26 and over). To encourage entries, the Society is offering a cash prize of £100 for each age group within each category, so making nine prizes in all. A ‘best in show’ prize of £250 will also be awarded to one of the nine prize winners whose work is judged to be the overall competition winner.
Society president Kevin Trickett said “We’re always looking for innovative ways to raise awareness of what the Society does and we’re using the photography competition to generate interest in the Society and its activities. All photographs submitted will go into a digital exhibition that will be on display throughout this year’s Heritage Open Days and the prizes will be announced at a special event on 18th September. We hope that this competition will not only help to raise the profile of the Society but will also get people taking an interest in our often beautiful but always interesting local architecture.”
